Our U9 Development Team were beyond excited to be playing in their first big tournament and looked good right from the very start.
Game 1 against Coquitlam Metro Ford Juventus was an excellent performance against a strong opponent resulting in a brilliant 3-1 win and would lay the foundation for what would be a great weekend for this young group. Goals would come from Jacob who got the opening 2 goals with Finn adding a third before a late strike from Metro Ford to keep our defensive line of Axl, Game MVP Matteo and goalkeeper Presley on their toes to the last minute.
Game 2 would be against South Burnaby Falcons. Despite having the bulk of the play and most of the possession we faced a determined opponent that just wouldn’t let us get into our stride resulting in a much less cohesive performance and a little less composure on the ball stopped us from creating the types of opportunities we created in the earlier game. However, determined to get the opening goal we would finally break down the stubborn opposition when Sam calmly guided in a great one time finish into the corner of the net from an excellent ball into the box from Axl. Jacob would soon add a second but again a late goal from the opposition would test the young groups nerves till the final minute. Game MVP – Matteo
Game 3 would be our toughest game in the group against the host Central City Breakers Elite 07 team. Our oppenets in this one sure could play and our defending from the front to the back had to be at its best along with some outstanding goalkeeping from Presley who made a number of first class saves to frustrate our opponents when they looked like getting the opening goal. However we also created some excellent chances with some sharp play to break down a well organized defence and took a lead on a finely executed breakaway when Luca coolly squeezed in a rebound at the goalkeepers near post from a tight angle. Soccaskool U9s travelled to Penticton this weekend to play a pair of matches against Excelsior U10/11. These teams played against each other in a double header last month, with Penticton making full use of their advantage in size and strength to record a couple of comfortable victories.
It looked like this weekends games were going to follow the exact same pattern, as the opening match kicked off and the home team once again utilized the long ball to race into an immediate 2-0 lead. However, this time the Soccaskool players knew what to expect and were better prepared and did not panic. Our new defensive partnership of Axl and Mateo along with debut goalkeeper Presley behind them remained composed and began to look comfortable nullifying the threat of the long ball. Meanwhile our players were encouraged to be patient, keep passing the ball and to work hard as a group to keep building the play. As a result Soccaskool began to enjoy long periods of possession and soon started to create goal scoring opportunities. When striker Jackson popped in the first goal from close range to bring it back to 2-1 the Soccaskool players visibly grew in confidence. After that, our team played some great soccer which was very entertaining to watch. The goals started to come with Soccaskool dominating possession with Jacob in fine form controlling the match from centre midfield as well as scoring two goals. Another goal for Jackson, and a hat trick from the very dangerous Callum would give Soccaskool a very nice 7-4 win.
The second game was also very entertaining to watch, with more excellent soccer from Soccaskool on display. Penticton also played their part with increased efforts to try and play good possession based soccer. The result was a well balanced, evenly matched game between two good teams. Another goal each from Jacob and Jackson would complete both of their hat tricks for the day, and give Soccaskool a very well earned 2-0 win. Great game, well done to both sets of players.
This U9 team is taking shape very nicely. Every player contributed to two excellent performances and showed great growth in their decision making and concentration.
Player of the day has to go to Jacob, who was quite simply outstanding in both games.
Yesterday our new U9 development group made the trip to SoccerQuest in Kamloops to play their very first games as a group against SoccerQuest’s U9 and U10 Groups.
In a day long event with 3 games the group recorded a comfortable win in game 1, a humbling defeat in game 2 against an older group and an entertaining 5-5 draw in the final game of a long but very enjoyable day.
A great experience for the young group who managed to play some excellent football and the games provided some excellent insight in to areas of focus for the young group moving forward.
Highlight of the day : A wonderfully executed goal in our final game after a sweeping move out of defence with some excellent passing and a well picked out assist from Jacob resulting in a very composed first time finish from Magnus. Decision making in the build up and composure and technique on the finish were first class !
Well done to everyone involved and a big thank you to the parents for making the trip !
